EB News: 21/03/2014 - 16:33
The programme aims to increase opportunities and aspirations for young people with disabilities.
The grant goes towards areas like: training teachers to engage young disabled people in school sport; connectig schools with disability sport organisations; and visits from Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
Children’s Minister Edward Timpson said: "I’ve seen for myself some of the excellent work that’s been done through the Project Ability grant and I’m delighted to announce its extension for a further year. Sport should be open and accessible to everyone – it not only increases physical activity levels but can raise confidence and aspirations and make a real difference to the lives of young people."
The Schools minister is calling on schools to enhance PE and school sport opportunities for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), in the spirit of the Paralympic Games.
The research by charity Support Send Kids, commissioned by Sky News, shows that two out of five (40 per cent) parents of children with SEND had to leave their jobs, and 33 per cent reduced their hours.
