Remote learning predominant for secondary schools

Face-to-face support from teachers for years 10 and 12 in secondary schools should be used to supplement remote education, the DfE has said in updated guidance.

On 24 May, the Prime Minister announced that secondary schools should plan on the basis that from the week commencing 15 June, they can invite year 10 and 12 pupils (years 10 and 11 for alternative provision schools) back into school for some face-to-face support with their teachers, subject to the government’s five tests being met.

The guidance says remote learning is the "predominant mode of education" during this term for pupils in these year groups, and that the time in schools with teachers will supplement it.

It says schools should also "continue to use best endeavours to support all other pupils remaining at home, making use of the available remote education support and ensuring a high quality offer".

The guidance says that secondary schools are only able to have a quarter of the year 10 and year 12 cohort (for schools with sixth forms) in school at any one time.
