Only two per cent of CO2 monitors delivered to schools

Just two per cent of the promised carbon dioxide monitors have been delivered to schools so far, a month after the government’s ventilation scheme started.

The scheme, which is backed by a £25 million government investment, was announced in August and will enable staff to act quickly where ventilation is poor and provide reassurance that existing ventilation measures are working.

Letting fresh air into indoor spaces can help remove air that contains Covid virus particles and is important in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Asked for an update on the number of monitors delivered so far on BBC Breakfast, education secretary Nadhim Zahawi said the last number he saw was around 7,000 – which is just over two per cent of those promised.

However, he said that over 90,000 will be delivered by the end of this month and then scaled up in November to deliver the full amount.

Zahawi explained the scheme was dependent on a combination of supply and working with schools to see how many they need.
