How does it work?
With Reading Plus, each pupil is placed on a personalised learning path. When starting the programme, pupils will complete the diagnostic InSight Assessment, which measures their individual strengths and skills gaps.
Using these baseline results alongside ongoing formative and summative assessments, Reading Plus adapts its content to target each individual’s specific needs – ensuring every pupil is appropriately challenged to maximise their progress.
Reading Plus can be implemented as a whole-class reading strategy or for smaller intervention groups, depending on your needs.
Creating proficient readers
Reading fluency is an essential skill for pupils to comfortably finish the SATs papers, and Reading Plus is the only literacy tool that addresses the hidden hurdle of silent reading fluency.
The patented Guided Window guides the reader's eyes left-to-right across a page of text at a bespoke speed, utilising a moving box. As each pupil’s reading improves, the speed of the box will increase.
The Guided Window keeps pupils focused on reading the relevant material while developing fluency, comprehension, and independent reading at a year-appropriate rate.
Reading Plus aligns with the national curriculum as:
The wide range of complex and engaging texts ensures pupils are frequently made aware of connectedness within the curriculum and the relevance of reading across subject areas.
Pupils are exposed to unfamiliar texts from topics outside their cultural context, with more challenging vocabulary.
The programme also includes visual-perceptual skill-building and vocabulary development components encouraging pupils to build knowledge and mastery of general academic vocabulary.
Foster academic success
Helping prepare teachers for the Year 6 curriculum and end of year SATs, Reading Plus provides educators with quick access to comprehensive reports detailing pupil, class, school and trust data.
Teachers can swiftly pinpoint pupils in need of extra support or challenge and identify specific skill areas, thereby saving valuable time and resources. This ensures that any gaps in knowledge are identified and remedied long before SATs come around.
Teachers also receive the KS2 Question Level Analysis Report, which specifically measures pupils against the KS2 reading domains (such as inference and retrieval) that are essential for SATs success. Here, you can measure each pupil's progress and be provided with relevant intervention materials for struggling readers.
An evidence-based programme
Reading Solutions UK partnered with Derby Research School and Spencer Academies Trust to determine the efficacy of Reading Plus. The results showed that on average:
Those eligible for pupil premium using Reading Plus made 97% more progress than eligible pupils in the control schools.
Boys who used Reading Plus made 45% more progress than boys with no access.
The study also found that EAL and SEND pupils using Reading Plus made significantly more progress than those pupils of the same demographic who didn’t have access.
