Half of adults support teacher strike action, finds poll
A poll from YouGov of 5,092 adults in Great Britain revealed that 51 per cent supported strike action by teachers, which commences today, 1 February.
NEU Union announced strike action over pay after positive ballot results. There will be seven days of strike action in February and March, though any individual school will only be affected by four of them
The poll showed that 40 per cent opposed the action, while eight per cent said they didn’t know.
When broken down by age, support decreased the older the adult was. Thirty per cent of 18-24 year olds said they strongly supported the strike action, whereas 22 per cent of adults aged 50-64 supported the action. Meanwhile, 13 per cent of over 65 year olds supported the strikes.
When broken down by region, London had the highest amount of support, at 67 per cent.
This is the first national strike by teachers in six years.
