MPs try to beat pupil hunger during school holidays
A new law is set to be proposed calling for local authorities to make sure that free meals are provided for pupils who would go hungry during school holidays.
According to Tes, Labour politician Frank Field is appealing for money from the sugary drinks levy to be used to fund council provision of free meals.
The School Holidays (Meals and Activities) Bill already has the support of 114 MPs, including Labour MP Frank Field.
He argues that the law change would tackle “one of the great injustices afflicting children in this country: a widening of inequalities at school caused by lack of food during holidays”.
The bill would place a legal duty upon local authorities to ensure that free meals and fun activities are provided for youngsters who would otherwise go without during the holidays.
