Head teachers launch petition to save infant free school meals
EB News: 02/06/2017 - 11:05
An online petition to save universal free school meals for infants has been set up by headteachers.
It follows the Conservative’s plan to replace free school meals with free breakfasts for all primary school pupils.
The petition, which has received thousands of signatures, is led by heads from London, Surrey, Lincolnshire, Cumbria, Devon and Buckinghamshire.
The petition website says: ‘This policy change will damage children’s health, well-being, attainment and academic results. Scrapping free school lunch for infants is simply bad decision making.’
The website also says that universal free school meals are good for children’s health, ensure that disadvantaged children who do not qualify for the pupil premium get at least one nutritious meal a day, and give children and staff a chance to sit together to discuss issues that concern them.
Nearly three-quarters of teachers (72%) say the current SEND system fails children, yet more than half (56%) expect anticipated reforms to negatively impact SEND pupils with complex needs.
Over a quarter of all schools and colleges across England are taking part in the free National Education Nature Park programme, which sees young people create nature-rich spaces on school sites.
The government has announced a new package of bursaries and scholarships worth up to £31,000 to train to teach in subjects including chemistry, maths, physics, and computing.
Schools in England could face an annual shortfall of £310 million in covering the cost of free school meals unless urgent action is taken, according to a new report led by Northumbria University.
