School-led training more successful in converting trainees into teachers
According to The Good Teacher Training Guide 2017, trainee teachers on school-led courses are more likely to start a career in teaching.
This is compared with those on university courses.
The guide shows that 90 per cent of final year trainees which had school-based training went on to have a career in teaching.
Whereas, 79 per cent from university post-graduate courses and 74 per cent on undergraduate courses entered teaching.
The number of trainees who are training in schools rather than on a university course has also increased, with 2016-17 seeing a rise of five per cent to 56 per cent from the previous year.
The report says a likely explanation is that “those opting to train in schools are more committed to teaching, and schools select them more carefully, seeing them as possible future colleagues”.
