NAHT to develop advice on how to better support LGBT staff

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has announced that it is working to develop advice for school leaders on how to better support LGBT staff in schools.
The union highlights that a large number of staff don’t feel they can be open about their sexuality due to concerns about the response of pupils and parents, meaning many are not even open with colleagues.
With 90 per cent of LGBT students reporting that they have been bullied because of their gender or sexuality, the NAHT believes that LGBT staff can provide an important role model for pupils and act as a ‘force for change’.
The NAHT will be inviting a number of LGBT organisations to work with them to develop advice for school leaders on how to support staff to be open about their own sexuality or gender in school and how to create a inclusive school environment.
