Teaching in several classrooms doesn't affect teacher engagement

New findings from Teacher Tapp looked at whether teachers were more likely to stay in their profession if they only taught in one classroom, as opposed to those who move between several.

But results of the survey, which was answered by 5,172 teachers on 12th June 2025, shows that teachers with just one room are no more likely to feel committed to teaching than those who move between three or more.

The survey asked teachers how many classrooms they are timetabled to teach in, and if they expect to be a teacher in three years’ time.

65 per cent of teachers with one class room said they are most likely to still be a teacher in three years’ time. 64 per cent of teachers with two classrooms said this, and 66 per cent of teachers with three or more also agreed that they would likely be a teacher in three years’ time.

Ten per cent of teachers with one classroom said they probably would not still be teacher in three years’ time. Nine per cent of teachers with two classrooms, and ten per cent of teachers with three or more classrooms answered the question with the same response.

The results show that the number of classrooms a teacher teaches in does not affect their commitment to their profession, and would not be a useful factor to target should policymakers or headteachers wish to boost teacher engagement.
