Number of teacher training applications fall

The number of people applying for teacher training has decreased by 6,510 in comparison to the previous year.
New data by UCAS also shows that teacher recruitment numbers have fallen by a third, compared to last year.
As reported by Tes, statistics show that at 18 December 2017, 12,820 people had applied for teacher training. At the same point in the previous recruitment cycle, 19 December 2016, 19,330 people had made applications. The figure equates to a drop of 6,510 (33 per cent).
Figures on the initial teacher training census for 2017, published by the Department for Education in November, revealed that the government missed its teacher training targets in all secondary subjects apart from PE and history.
Education Support, the charity dedicated to the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and education staff, has released its ninth Teacher Wellbeing Index.
