Cabinet reshuffle causes delays on plans to widen grammar school access
Following the appointment of a new education secretary amid the Prime Minister’s cabinet reshuffle, plans to widen access in grammar schools for disadvantaged pupils have been delayed.
This comes as Damian Hinds takes over from Justine Greening as education secretary.
Last year, schools minister Nick Gibb stated that the Grammar School Heads Association (GHSA) would arrange a commitment to improving the admissions rate for disadvantaged pupils with a formal agreement with the Department for Education.
Former education secretary Justine Greening was believed to have been ready to sign the agreement, but her resignation has now left the plans delayed.
As reported by Schools Week, the GHSA was near to finalising the agreement and according to director Jim Skinner, the change of secretary will “almost inevitably case a further delay”.
