Maths teacher bursaries to increase but upfront payments to be reduced

The bursary for new maths teachers is set to increase by £10,000, however, to encourage them to teach for longer the upfront amount will decrease.
The new bursaries were unveiled by education secretary Justine Greening and will see some maths graduates receive up to £35,000 on top of their salaries in exchange for joining and remaining in the profession.
The new proposals will see maths graduates get an upfront payment of £20,000 when they become secondary school teachers.
For those that stay on will receive two more payments of £5,000 in the third and fifth year of their teaching careers.
Education Support, the charity dedicated to the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and education staff, has released its ninth Teacher Wellbeing Index.
