Professional standards for school business management launches

Believing that all schools and academies in the country should have a reference point to assess their operational effectiveness, NASBM is encouraging practitioners to use the standards to assess their individual practice and to inform future CPD and career progression plans. It also encourages employers to use them to support performance management and training activities and urges schools and academies to use them to assess operational capacity and competency.

The standards have been co-developed with the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), have been formally endorsed by the sector and have ministerial backing. Practitioners have led the content development with significant input from professional associations, unions and various government departments.

Childcare and Education Minister Sam Gyimah said: “School business management plays a vital role in helping us achieve our aim of educational excellence everywhere, by enabling schools to be more innovative and autonomous, and by making sure money is spent as efficiently as possible.

“The new Professional Standards will not only define more clearly the characteristics of a good school business management professional, but will increase their standing and reputation, as experts in their field.”
