Road closures outside schools for Clean Air Day

A number of schools are closing roads during school-run hours to reduce pollution on Clean Air Day, today 20 June.

In Leeds, roads will be closed outside 11 primary schools between 1pm and 4pm this afternoon.

A major part of this is to reduce traffic and engine idling at school pick-up time, but it will also promote the importance of outdoor play.

In Leicester, Brandon Street outside Catherine Junior School is closed to traffic to try to improve air quality ( 8am until 5pm.)

This will allow the school to hold their classes outside.

The school is s working with the city council and walking and cycling charities Sustrans and Living Streets, on the event.

In Luton, Hillborough Road has been closing during pick up and drop off times at Hillborough Infant and Junior schools since 10 June (until 21 June).

The schools have teamed up with Luton Council and walking and cycling charity Sustrans to create a traffic-free space at the school gates.

Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution campaign. People, schools and businesses are encouraged to take simple measures to reduce their own impact on air pollution, such as leaving the car behind on the school run.
