Campaign calls for school breakfast funding

A campaign has been set up asking government to continue to fund school breakfasts in the next Budget.

The campaign, #BreakfastInTheBudget from Magic Breakfast is asking people to email their MP before the 2021 Budget is announced on 3rd March, asking the government to extend funding for school breakfasts, which is due to end in July.

The campaign argues that 2.3 million children in the UK experienced food insecurity between March and August 2020. These children sit through lessons with empty stomachs missing out on hours of valuable learning time.

The campaign argues that without additional funding for breakfast, these children will fall behind their classmates, limiting their future education and employment opportunities.

It says the upcoming 2021 Budget on 3rd March is the best chance for the Government to commit funding to ensure all children in England at risk of hunger can access a nutritious breakfast in school.

Now over 30 food insecurity, education, health and anti-poverty organisations have joined the campaign.
