Government to fund high value courses for school leavers

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced over £101 million to create more places on Level 2 and 3 courses so 18-19 year old school leavers can find work in high-demand sectors like engineering, construction and social care.

A treasury document says: "The government will provide £101 million for the 2020-21 academic year to give all 18-19 year olds in England the opportunity to study targeted high value Level 2 and 3 courses when there are not employment opportunities available to them."

A full list of qualifications available for the fund will be published in due course.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak also said in his summer statement that the government will fund "enough new careers advisers to support over a quarter of a million more people", and will pay employers £1,000 to take on new trainees, with triple the number of places.
