Welsh schools may not reopen until September

Education Minister Kirsty Williams has said that it is possible that schools in Wales will not reopen until September because of the coronavirus.

Williams had already announced that all schools in the country will close by Friday (20 March) and that exams would be cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak. Scotland, Northern Ireland and England have now also announced school closures and exam cancelations.

She has now said that, because authorities were dealing with ‘unprecedented times’, schools are ‘at the mercy of the progression of this epidemic’ and that she couldn’t tell parents when schools will reopen. However, she said, it would be a ‘considerable time’ before schools were back to normal.

There are now 170 confirmed cases in Wales, with the Welsh Government set to gain extra powers to deal with the epidemic through the Coronavirus Bill, which will soon gain Royal Assent. First Minister Mark Drakeford said it will help free up public services so they can do more on the frontline.
