KidZania London: For lessons you can’t teach

At KidZania London, we believe in letting aspirations and inspiration soar through experiential, hands-on learning. With a wide range of activities and careers to explore across the indoor city, children aged 4 to 14 can work, earn and play in a safe and inclusive environment.

Located in Westfield London, Shepherd’s Bush pupils will step into their very own child-sized city. Blending entertainment and learning, the art of role-play becomes the focus of their visit. Children can enjoy participating in a large range of activities, allowing them to be the protagonist of their own story. Real life brands including Mission Deli, Pokémon, British Airways and PDSA offer experiences in real-life job roles to encourage earning or spending of kidZos – the city’s currency, all whilst having fun!

Children can engage with a range of cross-curricular activities designed as if they were real-life jobs, all of which are created with KS1-3 national curriculum in mind. For example, pupils will learn about the organs of the human body and how they keep our bodies healthy in our city hospital, before attending to an emergency call as a paramedic and administering first aid to those that may need it! Or if that doesn’t take their fancy, kids can instead utilise their speaking and listening skills by learning what it takes to be a news presenter in the Al Jazeera TV Studio, all whilst performing in front of a green screen to their teachers in the viewing gallery!

With the kids free to explore the city and choose their own activities, a visit to KidZania encourages independent thinking, collaboration and entrepreneurship as well as financial literacy. It also inspires creativity, self-awareness and helps to develop knowledge of a city economy. KidZania prides itself on creating fun and safe learning environments where children can engage with the world of work, guiding them towards new areas of knowledge and motivates them to put their abilities into practices. It also allows them to develop areas of discipline, relationships and cognition without discrimination of race, physical ability, gender or background.

A visit to KidZania can also allow teachers to tick off Gatsby Benchmarks, and invest in developing enthusiasm for the world of work. Our pre and post-visit lesson plans support teachers in exciting children about their future visit whilst beginning to foster the sorts of skills kids can expect to utilise in the city, and then follow up their visits with conversations about future, their aspirations and achievements on the day.

Experiential learning as a tool allows kids to make their own discoveries with first-hand knowledge instead of reading or hearing about it through others, and the range of careers with which kids can interact with in KidZania allows development of social and emotional, physical and cognitive skills, linking school with real-life – the one element that is often missing from formal classroom learning.

Throughout the year, KidZania holds a series of events that demonstrates how learning can be applied to real-life. Upcoming events in 2020 include Maths Celebration from the 20th April – 1st May, Mental Health Awareness Week - 18th – 23rd May - and STEM Month (throughout June). Kids can enjoy worksheet trails around the city and take part in exclusive activities including pop -up partners such as London Air Ambulance Charity, PDSA, Happy Teeth and Your Grey Matters.

As well as all of this, teachers can be certain that their educational visit to KidZania London offers not only a unique experience but a safe one. RFID security bracelets are issued to all pupils visiting the city and are linked to adults so that children can’t leave the city without their group. As well as robust risk assessments in co-ordination with Westfield London, all entry and exit points are manned and all staff are DBS checked. On-site lunches can also be arranged for true peace of mind.

KidZania London is open for school visits during term time with prices starting from £10 per pupil and includes a 4-hour experience in the city, plus free teacher tickets, resources and planning trips. To book your next school trip with us or to find out more, visit our website or contact us today.
