According to the World Health Organization, more than 90 percent of the world’s population have no access to clean air. A figure that is increasing rather than decreasing in times of an airborne pandemic, climate change, and increasing levels of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide in the ambient air. Particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ground-level ozone (O3). This particularly affects urban areas.

Schools and Nurseries are often located close to busy roads, and so the air that even the youngest children breathe in day after day is massively polluted. But it is the children and adolescents who face the greatest impact. Experts believe that air pollution may be damaging every organ in the human body. In addition, pollen and airborne allergens make life difficult for many people.

MANN+HUMMEL has designed a special approach helping educational institutions like schools and nurseries for cleaner air within and around their buildings. MANN+HUMMEL started out in producing fabric air filters for the Volkswagen Beetle. After eight decades, the company is a leading global expert in filtration with over 80 locations on all continents.

By separating the useful from the harmful, MANN+HUMMEL became the market leader for clean air in operating theaters and cleanrooms. MANN+HUMMEL delivers both mobile indoor air purifiers, as well as retrofitting and updates to existing ventilation or filtration systems tailored to the need of the respective building and its users. Thanks to individually-tested HEPA H14 filters, more than 99.995 percent of viruses, their mutations, bacteria and other micro-organisms are captured.

Antiviral air purifiers

Depending on the room size, three mobile air purification systems are available to provide healthier, virus-free air in basically any indoor space – be it in the classroom, the secretary's office, the assembly hall or the playroom in the nursery school: the OurAir SQ500 (for rooms up to 40 square meters), the OurAir TK 850 (for rooms up to 70 square meters) and the OurAir SQ2500 (for rooms up to 200 square meters). For particularly large rooms, several units can be placed in a modular way. Following the "plug-and-play" principle, they immediately provide healthier air. The units are compact and quiet, efficient in operation and easy to maintain. Especially in schools, where concentrated work is required, the noise level is a decisive factor. The effectiveness of the devices has been proven by globally recognized institutes (e.g. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP), including a test setup in a classroom under realistic conditions.

Retrofitting and upgrading of air conditioning and ventilation systems

In addition to mobile antiviral air purifiers, MANN+HUMMEL also offers the conversion and upgrading of air conditioning and ventilation systems, which also significantly reduces the risk of infection in internal spaces. With decades of experience in the field of clean rooms and operating rooms, MANN+HUMMEL were able to develop a new ePTFE HEPA filter in the H14 class. With filtration efficiency of more than 99.995 percent according to EN 1822, it offers optimum protection against viruses, bacteria and microorganisms. Another advantage: This low differential pressure makes it possible to equip your HVAC system with a filter class that safely captures coronaviruses without having to replace the entire system. The filter meets the requirements of class E fire protection according to EN 13501.

From indoor spaces to outdoor areas: Filter Cubes

The same process applies to outdoor places. Take a nursery playground next to a busy road. The fine dust burden is bound to be higher than tolerated limit values. MANN+HUMMEL’s Filter Cubes draw in the polluted air and bind over 80 percent of the nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter.

The heart of this technology is a combination filter, which comprises a highly effective particle filtration layer and activated carbon layers that adsorb nitrogen dioxide. These activated carbon media absorb NO2 very effectively due to their large surface area. The technology is characterized by a particularly low pressure drop. As a result, it effectively cleans the air with very little use of energy. Thanks to their modular design, the Filter Cubes can be assembled to form filter columns.

In the past three years, the filtration specialist has installed more than 400 Filter Cubes worldwide, spread across 140 columns. The systems clean almost two billion liters of air per hour. That is roughly equivalent to the demand of fresh air for 4.1 million people. In addition to various locations in Germany, MANN+HUMMEL Filter Cubes are also used in Brazil, China, India and South Korea, among other places.
