41 per cent of teachers say tech improves behaviour

A report looking at the impact technology is having in education across the UK and Ireland has revealed 41 per cent of teachers believe technology helps improve pupil behaviour in the classroom.

The Promethean State of Technology in Education Report has been plotting trends in the education sector over the past four years. This year, the survey of over 2,000 teachers, school leaders and ICT managers across the UK and Ireland has revealed optimistic statistics around the influence of edtech.

Eighty-nine per cent of educators believe technology is integral to everyday life so should be present in education, a significant rise from 52 per cent in 2018/19.

Up from 32 per cent in 2017/18, 90 per cent of educators agree technology is a great way to engage students in the classroom.

Eighty-three per cent of teachers say technology helps them do their job better and 60 per cent of educators say they are striving to innovate using technology as a tool for education.

Ninety-five per cent of educators believe technology is best used where it can be appropriately adapted to a learning situation.

Figures this year show a substantial shift in educators identifying notable benefits of using technology in the classroom, from both a teaching and learning perspective. Despite worrying findings in relation to budgets, workload and wellbeing in the State of Technology in Education Report 2018/19, there is optimism through teachers striving to champion education through effective use of edtech.

“Despite the many challenges schools are facing which have been identified in the State of Technology in Education Report 2018/19, it is refreshing to see figures representing what we experience on a day to day basis, educators who are passionate about using technology to innovate in the classroom and reinforce learning. When technology is used as an enabler we see teachers achieving fantastic results,” commented Rachel Ashmore, Head of Promethean Academy.

Steve Moss, Chair of educational technology association Naace, said: “The findings of the State of Technology in Education Report 2018/19 highlight how educators around the UK and Ireland are doing some incredible things with technology. Technology has the potential to help overcome so many challenges in education and will increasingly support schools where workloads are increasing and processes becoming more complex, at both classroom and operational levels.

“Naace has developed a school Self Review Framework as a tool to underpin positive implementation and use of edtech, in ways that support reductions in workload and elevate attainment. The framework helps schools get the most out of technological investments.”
