Free tool launched to improve classroom air quality

A new, free tool has been launched to support schools to improve their air quality.

The easy-to-use web-based tool is designed to help schools and organisations supporting them, such as local authorities, to estimate how an air filter unit could impact air quality and energy consumption in a classroom.

The CHEPA (Classroom HEPA) impact calculator asks straightforward questions about a classroom, such as its floor area and height, the number and age of the pupils using it, and based on this information, makes a tailored calculation of the impact of adding an air filter unit on that classroom’s air quality and energy use.

While ventilation remains the primary and best method for refreshing indoor air, effective options can be limited in some classrooms. CHEPA provides a clear way to assess whether adding an air filtration unit could offer supplementary benefits or serve as a practical addition where ventilation is constrained.

Developed by researchers at Imperial College London and the Stockholm Environment Institute at the University of York, in collaboration with schools, and other prospective users, CHEPA is independent and grounded in peer-reviewed science and trusted UK datasets, designed to help schools make an informed decision about whether introducing a HEPA filter in their classroom would be beneficial.
