Parents spend more than £32 million on private tuition

Research by Tutor House has shown the most expensive areas in the UK to hire a tutor, after it calculated that parents have spent over £32 million on private tuition since 2005.

The site tracked more than 50,000 data points to collate the findings and has revealed that Hampshire tops the list as the most expensive area, followed by London and Surrey. In terms of subjects, Mandarin tuition was revealed to have the highest average hourly rate.

The research, which tracked more than 50,000 data points, comes after the Sutton Trust released survey results that show one in four secondary school students have received private tuition, with those who come from more affluent backgrounds more likely to receive tuition outside of school.

Gloucestershire and Yorkshire were revealed as the cheapest regions for tutoring.

Tutor House calculated that British parents have spent a total of £32,251,815 on private tuition since 2005, based on the average cost of tuition being £34.22 an hour.

Tutor House also used the data to find out which subjects are the cheapest and most expensive to be tutored in. Mandarin was revealed as the priciest with an average cost of £53 an hour, with History revealed as the cheapest at £32 an hour on average.

The research also revealed that where there is a high concentration of private and grammar schools, private tuition is more expensive.
