Angela Rayner elected deputy leader of the Labour party

The shadow education secretary Angela Rayner has been elected deputy leader of the Labour Party under new leader Sir Keir Starmer.

She has also been appointed by Starmer as chair of the Labour Party.

Rayner is MP for Ashton-under-Lyne. She was first elected to Parliament in 2015, and was appointed as shadow education secretary in July 2016.

It is understood she has given up her shadow education role.
