Online tests to replace national reading and numeracy exams in Wales

National reading and numeracy tests in Wales are set to move from a paper assessment to an online equivalent.

Currently, the assessments, which are taken by all pupils in years 2 -9, are carried out on paper.

But, they are now set to be replaced with new personalised assessments to be taken online, specifically designed for use in Wales.

The new tests are expected to automatically adjust the level of questions to suit the pupil taking the test by providing an appropriate level of challenge.

The change is expected to reduce marking time and administration.

The new tests will be phased in over the course of three years, starting from the 2018-19 academic year.

Education secretary, Kirsty Williams said: “These tests are about raising standards by showing the next steps that children need to take in their learning. The move to online personalised assessments for reading and numeracy will benefit pupils, parents and teachers.”
